A NATIONAL
CAMPAIGN BY ENGLISH HERITAGE TO PROTECT OUR LEGACY
OF TRADITIONAL WINDOWS AND DOORS
So what's it all about and why do people like Prince
Charles and the Duke of Edinburgh make the tabloids
on the subject? Well - put simply it's about
not changing the windows in your house or flat for
a type of window that ignores the original designer's
idea of what looked right in the overall shape and
style of the building.
That's all right you might say, for heritage windows in castles, churches
and stately homes, but not for the average terrace
house or suburban 'semi' and you probably thought
the council, or someone like that, had people to stop
eye-sores appearing on every street.
Well - you would be wrong on both counts, at least
partially. There is protection against architectural
vandalism on listed buildings and this does include
many of our most notable buildings. But it also excludes
the vast majority of Victorian and 20th Century
buildings that are not particularly famous.
If it's not 'listed' the local council Planning and
Building Control Officer is not likely to be interested.
So it's your opinion as a householder and local citizen
that this campaign is aimed at, as well as the owners
and occupiers of commercial premises with commercial windows. If you are considering
changing your windows or a handsome local building
is to be modernised, have a thought for the architectural
heritage of the property and the external impact it
makes on your local environment.
West Leigh are market leaders in the accurate facsimile
re-windowing of buildings originally fitted with metal windows made from wrought iron, cast iron and steel - in fact
the Company has, since the nineteen forties, gained
considerable experience in this type of work and have
often worked on projects where English Heritage has
been involved.
